Product Design and Development

The course "Product Design and Development" is offered as an open elective for the undergraduate students of engineering and management faculties of study. It is designed for students who wish to enhance their knowledge in product research and development. The course provides a comprehensive overview of the product design and development process, with a focus on turning product ideas into commercial products. It covers methodologies for product design, customer needs identification, and product lifecycle management (PLM). The course also introduces intellectual property rights (IPR), ensuring students gain knowledge of patents, copyrights, and trademarks.

The syllabus covers essential topics required for comprehensive knowledge in product design and development, including:

New Product Development: Introduction, characteristics, challenges, concurrent engineering, reverse engineering.
Product Development Process: Planning, concept development, system-level design, detailed design, testing, refinement, and production ramp-up.
Voice of Customer and Product Specifications: Product opportunity identification, perceptual mapping, Kano model, QFD, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA).
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR): Elements of PLM, lifecycle assessment, patents, trademarks, copyrights.
